Great, thanks!  For the time being, I'm going with a local build (kicked
off before you replied) with the broken patch disabled altogether, since
it should be a no-op against (Debian's) 4.14.

No worries; I can see how the discrepancy would have been easy to miss
if you weren't specifically looking for it -- particularly given that
the patch would have still helped the systems it was meant to, just at
the cost of breaking some others.
