As pelican is developed in python3, themes and plugins relies on this version, and some of them doesn't work with python2, and in future maybe even more.
I hope you can consider re-packaging pelican with python3 dependancy, eventually dropping python2 depends; otherwise people need to unistall debian package and use pip install to make things working.
