It was quite reasonable for you to request that Matthew change the source format. But it was also quite acceptable for him to deny that request. That's the decision-making structure in Debian: the package maintainer gets to decide things like that. When I was made aware of the bug, I chimed in with a suggestion to document the decision that Matthew had taken in a standardised way. I don't see how this could be hijacking.
