I was using alpine's password file as a way to connect to the local imap server, to read the user's local maildirs. It does not seem well suited to that.
A better way is documented in this blog post, but it's not at all easy to find. https://cpbl.wordpress.com/2011/11/16/how-to-alpine-maildir-offlineimap/ Essentially all that is needed is this in /etc/pine.conf: inbox-path={localhost}inbox rsh-command=/usr/lib/dovecot/imap Since lack of imap support is such a long-standing pain point with alpine, simply documenting this workaround in README.Debian would go a long way. -- see shy jo
