Replacing the ./configure invocation with dh_auto_configure fixes that, because debhelper passes the relevant --host flag. Please consider applying the attached patch.
This problem affects many packages, which are unable to cross-build and difficult boostrapping because they depend on this one. The fix looks unintrusive, and in the case of breakage, it should be easy to revert. Since the package seems unmaintained for many years I am doing an NMU without DELAYED. Cheers. -- Manuel A.
