Hello Florian, first thank you for spending your time helping to make Debian better with this bug report.
Openvpn use getaddrinfo to resolve the IP addresses for a given
hostname.
Getaddrinfo checks the /etc/hosts only if your /etc/nsswitch.conf
has the correct host line e.g.:
(hosts: files myhostname mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns)
So I close this bug.
