Yes, that sort of work would be greatly appreciated! However, I'm nervous about doing it on the basis of a build you did yourself of the package. Some of the bugs might well be packaging errors even if they manifest themselves in ways that look like more likely upstream errors. The only way I'm comfortable actually closing the bug is if it's confirmed to be fixed in an actual official Debian package.
