avalon-framework is a very, very old (pre-2003) Java framework which provides some code that nobody but fop is using anywhere, and fop isn't using most of it. avalon-framework fails to build with Java 9, so it seems like a good time to remove it from existence permanantly. I have produced a patch to remove the use of avalon-framework, and tried to upstream it here, with partial success: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/FOP-2733 Cheers, Chris.
