I've figured out how this bug can be relatively simply fixed: let db1-compat provide db_dump185. The version of this utility in db4.3 has no dependencies on anything except the db1 library, and so compiles very nicely inside the db1-compat package. So (especially as libdb2 is likely to vanish before etch), I attach a patch for db1-compat (although I'm not reassigning this bug there), which makes it build db_dump185 and conflict/replace libdb2.
