The problem with disabling this "feature" by default is that you then get a firefox process each time you open an url from other programs. OTOH, when you launch several times epiphany or nautilus, you only get one instance... except that if you launch it from another account or another host, you don't use the current instance. Anyways, in the current state of the firefox code, it's not safe to disable it by default, there's a huge possibility of loss of data in the profile. That's the problem with applications developed by people coming from the windows world...
