Hello, alien's documentation mentions environment variable RPMBUILDOPT, but the code in Alien::Package::Rpm actually uses RPMBUILDOPTS. It's only a typo, but a rather nasty one - it took me quite a while to figure out why alien/rpmbuild was not acting the way it should have had...
