For the second one, I had to change the character encoding of the
terminal, i.e. selecting "ISO-8859-1" in the
"Terminal"/"Set Character Encoding" menu.
(or "Terminal"/"Définir le codage des caractères" in French)
In both cases, the warning messages:
"Aucun fichier ou répertoire de ce type"
and the translations:
"Spain --> España"
were correct.

Gah. I'm glad I didn't open a report for that problem alone, because I
guess I would have looked pretty clueless.
Sincere thanks about this "tip", that will explain why so many programs
seemed to handle different encodings so bad.
So, the original bug is fixed, but it seems OK to let this open. This
bug is now about the problem Nicolas described and for which he
submitted a patch.
