I did try 5.2.17 and domain details are working again, which is great.
Unfortunately nameserver queries do not work in 5.2.17, so I ended up
using both old and new whois at the same time:
* /usr/local/bin/whois-5.2.17 for domains
* /usr/local/bin/whois-5.2.7 for nameservers
