Package: ftp.debian.org Severity: normal pyfits has seen its last upstream version more than a year ago, and is not developed anymore upstream. It has been superseeded by the astropy package, which provide the same functionality with a very similar interface.
Users have been warned to transition from pyfits to astropy. Now that stretch has been released, it's time to remove pyfits from the archive.
