Oops, sorry for not having answered to this. This sounds like a rather shallow bug actually: it seems that the hpoj user is not in the 'lp' group, so that it isn't able to access /dev/lp*. Or did you already check that? If that's not the case, then an initgroups() call could be missing somewhere. I just wonder why it works for USB devices, which also requires a special group to access them. (BTW, I don't have such a printer, so I can't test all of this myself).
