Umm, the difference shows up just fine in nvi:

    $ perl -e 'print "xxx", chr(160),  "xxx\n";'  > rrr
    $ nvi rrr
    [displays]
    aaa\xa0bbb

Confirmed in xterm, rxvt, and gnome-terminal.

Umm, what locale have you set? It's possible that your locale is
mapping chr(160) to a displayable space.
