It seems that there are numerous reports about the CD not being recognized anymor ewhen SATA is activated for the HD on these laptops. See for instance http://www.but.ch/root/public/sysadmin/linux/kernel-2.6.14.5/dell_i6000.html Could you run "lsmod" from 2nd console at the moment the CD is not recognized ? If "sr_mod" does not show up, please try loading it manually with "modprobe sr_mod".....and try again by going back to 1st console and retry the CD detection step.
