Dear Maintainer,
running command
$ echo 'label("$u$", (0,0));' > min.asy
$ asy -f pdf -tex pdftex min.asy
hangs (deadlocks) due to missing graphicx.tex file.
Problem is solved by installing package texlive-plain-extra.
Running
$ asy -f pdf -tex pdflatex min.asy
works OK.
I suggest to resolve this by adding texlive-plain-extra to Asymptote's
dependencies.
