the netstat plugin does not report active connections because the awk filter (line 106) searches for 'active connections ope' while the output of 'netstat -s' (for the current net-tools version 1.60+git20161116.90da8a0-1 in testing) is 'active connection ope' without the 's' in 'connection'.
