As the followups indicate, this is a documentation issue. The user's guide is the place for detailed information. I modified the manual page to include a list of all of the variables which might be used, but that list was already in the user's guide (which is part of the Debian package).
The treatment of the variables is handled in lynx's trace-logs. All of the questions raised in this report could have been addressed by reading the existing documentation.
