Package: redshift-gtk
Version: 1.9.1-4
Severity: normal

I have recommended this tool to a friend that has this problem of
using the computer too late at night (bad boy, go to sleep! ;).

When we did the first setup, my friend naturally clicked on the
Redshift icon in the application menus, and the app at first seemed to
start fine, but then just disappeared.

I then realized I had tweaked my own app to hardcode my location and
promptly went around applying the same config (in
.config/redshift.conf) to my poor confused user. While this is
documented in the configuration file, there is little chance my user
would have (in order of skill level required):

 1. found the documentation

 2. read through it

 3. figured out how to create a configuration file

 4. figured out the exact coordinates where he is

 5. convert them from DD°MM'SS" to DD.DD°

Granted, levels 3-5 may vary. :) And yes, most skilled users can
figure that out, but a lot of Debian users cannot do that, and I would
argue they should not *have* to do this.

The GUI should provide them with a configuration menu, or at least a
popup explaining that the app is not configured, not silently fail.

I don't remember exactly why redshift failed to start. I remember it
was on a Jessie system, running in a regular Gnome session, which had
the added disadvantage of hiding the notification area so even when we
configured the app correctly, we still wouldn't see it.

We also tried running it in Cinnamon - there it was a little better
because the notification area is more visible.

Anyways - it would nice to improve the behavior in case of failure for
our less technical users.

Thanks!
