Package: firefox
Version: 1.5.dfsg-4
Severity: wishlist

It is sometimes desirable to have firefox start as a new process, yet by
default it insists on telling any existing firefox on the same X display to
open a new window. It is possible to change this by setting the MOZ_NO_REMOTE
environment variable, but this is, AFAIK, completely undocumented and obscure.
Since debian wraps firefox startup in a script, it would be handy to have that
script provide that possible functionality, e.g. by adding a -noremote flag.

I described some of the reasons I sometimes want to do this here:

http://lists.debian.org/debian-amd64/2006/02/msg00107.html
http://lists.debian.org/debian-amd64/2006/02/msg00110.html

(once I knew to google for MOZ_NO_REMOTE I determined that another reason is
that some people want to compare side-by-side firefoxen of different versions
to make sure their sites behave the same way, or similar)

It might be worth documenting that the -noremote flag would often also
require providing an alternate profile with the -p flag (but not always--
if you are ssh'ed to a remote host, and want to run firefox there to view a
web page only accessible to its IP address and display locally, you wouldn't
need the -p).
