I see that doing as you suggest makes motd to have the usual uname line that was lost some time ago, but I don't see why exactly you call this a "jessie -> stretch" regression. Was it not already broken in jessie? (I don't see any uname line in any jessie machine here, at least not in any which was installed from scratch). In either case, I will try to have this fixed for stretch, at least for newly installed systems, as the fix is certainly trivial. Thanks a lot.
