I think is a good idea save original nameservers in new resolv.conf because

Can you explain with an example what you are claiming about increasing
reliability?

I'm not sure that this can be done in general, because establishing a
vpn connection may invalidate routes to previously configured name
servers.

Ok, simple example.
I get dynamic address from provider DHCP-server, additional I get several nameservers and routes. In preview version vpnc-script drop provider nameaservers after establishing connect to VPN-server, this is not very good because I can't found internal servers and if new nameserver not answer, many reason for this, I lost connect only to vpn resource, but another resource will be available. This incorrect if vpn connection make current routes invalidate because in this case I can work only with vpn resource.
