The culprit is more around iputils-ping, since capabilities seem to have been missing for /bin/ping The correct setting should be : # getcap /bin/ping /bin/ping = cap_net_raw+ep Otherwise, doing this will solve it : # apt-get install --reinstall iputils-ping Not sure exactly what led to an upgraded system where that was missing... but maybe the workaround will be useful for some others.
