Hello David, this looks to me really like an unsolveable problem with the current stdin behaviour of mmv, since files with newlines even more produce problems.
When/Why do you use the stdin mode? I would suggest to change the behaviour to <from>\0<to>\0\0 However thats not backward compatible and not very command line friendly. Perhaps a warning in the manpage and a break-out error on lines which have more that 2 spaces is another option?
