Eye totally agree with this being wishlist.

And leisurely refactoring a patch for this remaining a long-time project
for me to deliver.

My bash-ism <<<\\ was supposed to express:

the idea of firing up a lynx or links and seeing nothing
unless you are acquainted enough with those oldies but goldies
to enter a \\ backslash on your teletyper to get the explicit view-source.

Personally eye had rather see the default the other way around:

present the plain source and fire up the

html[2345]|utf-8|7bit-translit|…
pdf|odt|tex|troff|ps|...
zip|gzip|tar|dpkg|git-patch|…
png|jpeg|wav|pbm…
mp3|flac|wav…
mp4|webm|...

interpreter renderings manually with mnemonic key presses or menu picks.
