Turns out that the latest tarball relase of slime (as of today), that is version 1.2.1, is too old to be able to connect to the one in debian packages. I have pulled a current version of slime from CVS, copied the file in emacs on my windows XP client machine, and now it works. So it appears there is nothing wrong in the debian packages, except that they are too new ;-). I think you can close this bug. Only a suggestion: it could be very useful to put a little warning somewhere in the documentation, to avoid other people falling in this same trap?

thanks a lot!
Giovanni
