This bug isn't fixed yet: the patch in caja is accompanied by multiple commits in mate-themes. According to https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/mate-themes, no new version of mate-themes has been uploaded.
The current situation (using the latest caja and mate-themes), is black text on a dark background with a white caret. For BlackMATE, this means hard to read text, for ContrastHighInverse it means completely unreadable text.
