Overall, I agree with Sam here, it's hard to come up with hard rules about this, and as long as upstream and the Debian maintainer have thought properly through the tradeoffs, I'd generally be inclined to trust them. (In the particular case of gpg and gpg-agent, I generally think dpkg-diverting it should be fine for debugging, since few systems that have private key material on them should be multiuser systems.) -- Tollef Fog Heen UNIX is user friendly, it's just picky about who its friends are
