Please note that by default, the "Debian sensible browser" might be used (ie /usr/bin/sensible-browser, which might call the browser defined in the "BROWSER" environment variable, or one of /usr/bin/x-www-browser and /usr/bin/www-browser. Please tell me what x-www-browser you use if you configured GNOME to use "Debian sensible browser".
