"apt-get dist-upgrade" pulled in a new kernel and after the reboot the display 
was completely black.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
     ineffective)?

I tried rebooting into the old kernel, i.e. 
linux-image-4.7.0-0.bpo.1-amd64-unsigned,
with version 4.7.8-1~bpo8+1.

   * What was the outcome of this action?

X started and I could log into the desktop.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

I got the outcome I hoped for.
