On a system which uses scsi for the primary hard drive and ide for the secondary, simply putting the appropriate modules in /etc/modules is insufficient. If I have hotplug happen before lvm rather than after it works, but this could bork hotplug stuff that depends on /usr (which isn't mounted until lvm is mounted). It's working for me for now as I don't have any hotplug stuff that accesses anything but the root partition (which is currently not on lvm). I'll be trying the workaround mentioned above, but won't know if it worked until I do a reboot (which won't happen for a while).
