Dear Mattia, Thanks for your mail. I find your final paragraph confusing however -- if you yourself are not prepared to take over its maintenance, why are you asking this question? Do you not think that other open source maintainers are also volunteering their time?
The fact that only 2 NMUs has happened since 2009 is a testament to the low maintenance required on this mature package. However, xscreensaver only has a couple of hacks that require GLE, and while I like having them available, I don't think declaring GLE as a key package because of that tenuous dependency is a truthful statement to make. So if the release is indeed in jeopardy because neither myself nor you or any other maintainer with the power to NMU can be bothered to fix it, then the xscreensaver maintainer can drop the build-dep without much fuss.
