This is one of the changes in the Ubuntu package. Personally for me I prefer d-i, as it allows producing stand-alone packages, which better fit my use case. As long as this is not broken, I have no objection. One annoying aspect of dkms is that there's a template that needs to be created. It is possible to create it manually. But it is annoying for a package with so many modules such as DAHDI (and some are added on patching).
