I was able to resolve the issue somewhat by doing -

b1 - #822716 - firefox: FTBFS with GCC 6: 'malloc' was not declared
in this scope (Fixed: 48.0-1)
Summary:
firefox(1 bug)
although why it is sharing that bug which is resolved and shouldn't concern me.
[$] apt-cache policy firefox
firefox:
Installed: 49.0-4
Candidate: 49.0-4
