If you think this issue is severe enough that you'd like to work on backporting the fix to the stable package then you'll need to prepare an updated stable package, debdiff it against the current package and contact the (Stable) Release Managers for review/approval. Please beware that there are other crash-fixes upstream which you might want to consider looking at as well.
