Hi http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=208198 this discussion discuss two issue. The package build dependencies and runtime dependencies.
Could we resolve at least the runtime dependencies ? nvidia-glx could stop providing libGL.so (which should be in -dev for the sake of god) and conflict with xlibmesa-dev. It may not help with build issues. If i understood well, nvidia-glx-dev is not a libgl-dev thus in this case we cannot build other opengl applications if we don't have xlibmesa-dev installed .... It seems crazy . In all case nobody should build opengl applications with nvidia GL installed . Even in a chroot env the loaded nvidia module breaks building with xlibmesa opengl implementation so is the current hack (having a mixed nvidia GL and mesa GL environment) relevant for anything else than a few corner cases while breaking most systems. I am even wondering if all nvidia users haven't made the symlink by hand at some time and feel good with it ... are the nvidia packages only relevant to upgrades ? I know a bunch of debian user that use the upstream installer, upgrade are good but if the first install never work ... A debconf page asking for the user to make the symlink by hand is something crazy , but i would highly want it for nvidia-glx. Regards Alban PS: you should take a look at xserver-xfree86 somedays. I found a bunch of reports where X crashed ... because the users had GLcore and glx loaded at the same time. Branden did not know what happend and tagged most upstream but your package is a monster breaker ! Especially the other report with mutli card (nvidia and s3) crashing the server when xscreensaver start GL on both cards is another instance of that. Obviously the s3 driver try to use GLcore when the glx implementation is used .... it would not if GLcore was properly removed ! If it was a TLS or anything else problem it would crash when the s3 card is removed ... http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=233518 "Symbol __glXActiveScreens from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libdri.a is unresolved!" I higly suspect this issue explain the xinerama and billardgl important bug i submitted a year ago. The maintenair fixed it by not starting in fullscreen anymore. I would like to say thank you for having nvidia in debian. Only that my guess are that more than 100 important bugs in the BTS due to its current mess with xlibmesa. Not taking the hours the other maintainers lost.i (again not counting user hours). If that is the only way to build nvidia package, i would say remove them from stable, maybe even unstable. Experimental is the place this stuff. Bye Alban -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
