And confirmed by me, also on sarge, with a non AD domain (flat NT4 domain)

I think you gave me the right direction to spot this annoying bug
which forced me to hack a small script on a bug production server to
enforce restarting winbind when "wbinfo -t" fails.

Anyway, this is really worth investigating this because it can hit
production servers very hard....
