pkgsel uses the APT::Status-Fd interface to display download and install progress in a progress bar in the d-i UI. While aptitude actually does a better job of displaying progress via the statusfd than apt-get (it includes the download time estimate, which apt-get for some reason does not), it is missing the file transfer rate.
