OK, so the touchpad really isn't detected by the kernel. But the kernel wasn't updated in testing or unstable for more than a month. (I uploaded to unstable at the weekend, but you said this problem started 5 days ago.) So it doesn't make sense that this would have changed as a result of the package upgrade. Can you send a kernel boot log? And can you also send a boot log from before the upgrade, when the touchpad was working (this should still be in one of the /var/log/messages.* files).
