Are you sure you're getting this error with GCC 4.0?
I've compiled it both on my x86 and my x86_64 using gcc-4.0 without a
problem.
The buildds[1] also show no problem with gcc 4.0 (the only problems are
missing dependencies in some archs)

Please run:
# ls -l $(which gcc)
Just to make sure your gcc is pointing in the right direction.
