I was also affected by systray icons disappearing and some/all of it's functionality stopped working (kdeconnect). Unlocking widgets and logging out and back in again restored things to normal. What I also noticed is that there was 'huge' spacing when I started another app with a systray icon (quassel). With widgets unlocked, it was placed right next to the others like it used to. Thanks for the workaround Ignacio, much appreciated!
