I agree that the description should mention DBus, but it is not just a
desktop component, DBus has a system-wide bus which bluemon talks over.
You can start any program using the supplied client app. I have not yet
written an initscript to daemonise it, I should probably supply one.

If you use start-stop-daemon --background --start --exec bluemon-client
you can have exactly the effect you want.
