I've found a way to fix this bug reverting a change in libncursesw5 (see https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=816887 ) but note that this is not the definitive fix but a workaround (it's not clear that the failure is in the library or because mutt is misusing it somehow).
