Just got around upgrading my "email home" from wheezy to jessie and revisited this issue...
It seems upstream has ditched Evolution's support for spamc/spamd and now only supports invoking spamassassin directly... https://mail.gnome.org/archives/commits-list/2013-July/msg02156.html A dig through the jessie sources confirms this. The direct spamassassin invocation works well enough although email collection is noticeably slower than it used to be with spamc/spamd (which I think was fast more because it could have multiple online checks "in flight" than because of spamassassin startup time). But clearly Evolution isn't the place to be looking for spam filtering performance improvements... so please close this issue. Tim
