Indeed it requires firefox installed on the system. But it does not
need the firefox browser to be running. It uses a separate process and
window. Hence this is why it is called “standalone”.

Do you have a suggestion for rephrasing the description?

Indeed it used to depend on xulrunner, but the latter was dropped (and
you should ask the Mozilla maintainers if you are interested in the
underlying reasons).
