And the broken /var/lib/sbuild/apt.conf looks like this:
$ cat /var/lib/sbuild/apt.conf

APT::AutoRemove::SuggestsImportant "false";
APT::AutoRemove::RecommendsImportant "false";
Acquire::Languages "none";
This seems to be related to my .sbuildrc which contains
"$apt_allow_unauthenticated = 1;".
And this is confirmed by the code:

print $F qq(APT::Get::AllowUnauthenticated "true";\n");
}
Notice the final quote while it's the parenthesis that ends the string...
