Using a current Debian testing system, I just stumbled across the
same problem as Laurent trying to view the files in

   http://cairographics.org/talks/xdevconf_2005_02_13/svg/

I changed the requisite setting using "about:config" in the
location bar, so "font.FreeType2.enable" is now set to "true" in
my user "prefs.js" file under ~/.mozilla/.

One problem that I then encountered, looking at the files under
the above address is that instead of the correct text, the browser
chooses inappropriate fonts, apparently ignoring the Mozilla font
settings. In fact, first it tried to display the SVG files using
whacky mathematical symbols instead of the correct letters. This
was due to the latex-xft-fonts package, where these symbols are
not in their correct Unicode positions (which I consider a bug of
that package, and a grave one at that). After removing
latex-xft-fonts, the text in the SVG files is now rendered
legibly, but still using other fonts than the one specified in the
Mozilla preferences: from the looks of it, some East Asian fonts
that contain aesthetically offensive Latin glyphs.

So all in all, it looks like the font selection problem should be
fixed first before changing the font.FreeType2.enable setting.
But I would definitely love to see any action on this bug,
considering how old it is, and that it completely prevents the
display of any SVG files containing text, in spite of the fact
that it seems to be the package's intention to enable SVG as such.

Cheers,
Stefan
