I have been bitten by this too; I run Debian on a Beaglebone Black with 2 GB 
eMMC storage; it would be really near if I could save some space by using 
compressed modules.

In light of all the ARM and other non-x86 devices Debian supports nowadays this 
is a valid issue. Since implementing support is pretty trivial I don't see why 
this is being ignored.
